What is this?

This community is a fandom auction where people can offer to write original and fandom works, make art, bake, make crafts, share skills, etc. in exchange for donations to to support the incredible sex education website Scarleteen.

Scarleteen has been the premier online sexuality resource for young people worldwide since 1998. Countless members of various fandoms have used information from Scarleteen when making fanworks, as well as in our own lives.

Scarleteen has consistently provided free inclusive, comprehensive and supportive sex education, information and support to millions of young people every year.

What you might not know is that Scarleteen is the highest ranked online young adult sexuality resource but also one of the least funded and that the youth who need them most are also the least able to donate. You might not know that they have done all they have with a budget typically lower than the median annual household income in the U.S. You might not know they have provided the services they have to millions without any federal, state or local funding and that they are fully independent, grassroots media which depends on public support to survive and grow.

How does it work?
To offer: Comment on this post with your username, fandoms (if applicable), what you're offering, your starting bid, and your limits. Link to examples of your work if you want. Fill out the form for each thing you're offering (e.g. if I'm sending two packages of cookies, I post the form in two separate comments.)
To bid: When you see an offer you like, reply to the comment bidding at least the lowest amount in USD (you can use this currency converter). When the auction closes January 23, 2012 and you've won, make your donation to Scarleteen and send confirmation (still finding out how this will work). Then they make/send you something! It's that easy!

Hi all,

Heather Corinna (Scarleteen's founder/editor) tweeted a call for writers who want to talk about some of their personal experiences for the site, so young people can read something positive from someone who's been through what they're going through. Some possible topics she mentioned were:

  • choosing how to handle a pregnancy

  • understanding one's sexual identity (asexuality was also mentioned)

  • understanding one's gender identity

  • puberty

  • first romantic/intimate relationships

If this sounds like stuff you could see yourself writing about, please check out Heather's tweet, here with more info and contact.

First of all, another big thank you goes out to everyone who offered, bid, or helped organize this auction: THANK YOU!

All together, we raised (drumroll please)...

$899.50 !

Animated gif of Anton Yelchin as Ensign Pavel Chekov in the 2009 film Star Trek, rejoicing that he has made a successful transport.

That's enough to let 89,900 Scarleteen users access the site to find information they so sorely need to be in control of their own lives. You guys rock. <3

Note: [dw personal profile] boundbooks informed me that I've apparently been using the official DW icon for this comm and that that could mislead some people... I just thought the red swirl was a general icon that meant "dreamwidth!" *dies of the shame*

So I'm going to change to the green "earth" icon and encourage you to do the same if you've posted this promo anywhere (I updated the html in the text box with the correct icon). And if anyone asks you, no, this isn't an official DW project - just a fan.
